DALLAS WORKSHOPS

DALLAS WORKSHOP #1

REEL SHOOT PREPARATION WORKSHOP

Friday, July 5th

12:00-5:00 PM

Limited to 16 actors (all ages)

"My agent got me the audition; Del's reel got me the job!"

~ Patty Pell, actress

This is my first Reel Preparation Workshop, but has been needed by so many who have taken my reel shoots.  Perhaps it’s overdue.  Don’t get me wrong, not everybody needs this, but my Reel Shoots are fast and furious and this part in the Reel Shoot description scares many actors – “YOU MUST BE PREPARED!  Your work will suffer if you are NOT prepared.”  And it’s not only the lack of preparation that hurts a performance, it is FEAR!

The purpose of this workshop is to alleviate your fears!  Let’s just get rid of them before the shoot!  This workshop will prepare you for the reel shoot on July 6th or for a future shoot.   You will bring in the scenes you want to film (or are considering), we will rehearse them, choose the right ones and I WILL DIRECT YOU on the sets where we will be shooting.   We will also go over all aspects of the shoot, including playing to the camera, getting rid of nerves, makeup, hair, costumes, different characters, different looks and owning your character(s) in order to create a strong reel.

If you don’t plan to shoot a reel this time, this can be to prepare you for future film/TV/reel shoots.   You can also use this workshop as a monologue or scene study workshop, being directed by me while learning film-acting techniques.

DALLAS WORKSHOP #2

RISK TAKING AUDITION BOOT CAMP

Sunday, July 7th

9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Limited to 14 actors (all ages)

"I had to stop going to auditions thinking, ‘Oh, I hope they like me.’ I had to go in thinking I was the answer to their problem."

 ~ George Clooney

"Del's auditioning workshops gave me confidence and changed me from hating auditions to LOVING them."
~Ira Einsohn

Why aren’t you booking your auditions?  Do you stall at the callback – or are not getting them?  Do you question your choices because of FEAR?   How are your NERVES?  Do you trust your gut?   ARE YOU TAKING RISKS?   When I sit and watch auditions, there is nothing more boring than an audition that is safe, tentative and bland with no colors.  I call these “flat-line” auditions.  No levels.  This workshop will challenge you to start taking more risks in your auditions; to take control; to OWN the audition.  The workshop starts with a brief lecture/discussion on auditioning. Nerves, preparation, learning to love to audition and trusting your gut are strong themes! Then we get right to work! Each actor auditions two times. 1) Prepared audition pieces - a monologue or scene that is no longer than five minutes. This is designed to focus on pieces that can be prepared in advance of an audition. 2) An "under five" – around five lines or less. This audition focuses on how to make strong choices that help make an audition distinctive with a limited amount of material. (I will send you a selection of Under 5s to choose from or you may choose your own).   This workshop not only helps actors understand how well they are succeeding in the different kinds of auditions they will encounter while working, it also challenges you to stop playing it safe and start TAKING RISKS.

DALLAS WORKSHOP #3

TRUST YOUR GUT (AND GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD)

Sunday, July 7th

2:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Limited to 14 (all ages)

"Del Shores’ Trust Your Gut Workshop was the best workshop I have ever taken – anywhere!  He allowed us to be completely free to experiment! I cannot wait for more!"

~ Tracie Foster

Each time I sit in an audition session or watch taped auditions, I see actors make the same mistake over and over: THEY DO NOT TRUST THEIR GUT! Great actors second guess the choices that their instrument, their instincts, what THEIR GUT dictates. Many strong actors then get in their heads, and make safe choices and their work suffers as a result. Why? One word: FEAR! They start questioning – "Is this choice too risky?", "Am I even right for this role?" "Maybe they want (fill in blank)", "Maybe they want more.", "Maybe they want less." "Maybe they don't want me!" The monkeys start chattering in your head and the work is doomed! Diluted as a result. If you are second guessing your choices, your gut... if you change those organic "gut" choices, it is my strong opinion that your work is suffering as a result and you are costing yourself callbacks and JOBS! So, let's spend a few hours of fun, trusting our gut and getting out of our heads, making strong choices, taking risks and changing how you audition. This workshop is very simple. You show up with NOTHING prepared. I will supply you with two roles during the workshop. One will be a short monologue and the other will be a role in a group scene. I will guide you through making fast, from-the-gut, risk-taking, STRONG choices. You will have 15 minutes to go out and work on the monologue, 10 minutes to work on the group scene, then you will return with one rule -- YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE CHOICES that you have made FROM YOUR GUT in our rapid-fire decision making process.  I will then give you direction to alter one of the auditions to complete improv. Dallas agents Linda McAllister and Suzanne Horne have both asked me to include improv in my audition workshops.  When asked to improv, many actors freeze and are thrown.  Let’s remedy that.  I'll start the day with a 30-minute lecture/discussion, then we will get to work. All ages and all levels are welcome.  NOTE: I will be using a camera and monitor for a learning tool only (no uploads).

DALLAS WORKSHOP #4

CRASH COURSE IN WRITING WORKSHOP

Monday, July 8th

6 PM - 10 PM ish

Limited to 14 writers

"Del not only helped me see the importance of giving each character a distinct and unique voice, but he gave me the tools and knowledge I need to achieve it."

~ Brina Palencia

"Del’s writing workshop opened my eyes and my mind to creating characters from the ground up, from the inside out.”

~ Gregory Mansur, T.C.U. Professor – Film, Television, Digital Media Dept.

This time we are going to cram a lot into one evening!   This is for beginners as well as for those more advanced and for those who have taken my other writing workshops.

I started as an actor. I’m still an actor, although I wear other hats more often. But everything I do – including my writing – is an extension of my acting. So, I now teach actors who write or want to write – or writers who want to understand how acting and writing are connected, sharing how I write from the characters’ point of view.   Create the characters and they will take you on a journey!

PART ONE:  We will discuss creating characters, dialogue and touch on structure in all mediums I’ve worked in stage, film and TV.  In that, know I’m a non-traditionalist with structure and will encourage you to find your own path by allowing your creative muse and characters to guide your story. I will guide you through several fun writing exercises, focusing on finding and creating characters.   You will learn how to scratch deep to create full characters with real dialogue and how those developed, well-drawn characters will take you on a journey.

PART TWO: This part is optional, but highly suggested.  Those who are already working on a project can bring in a scene you are working on (10 minutes or less).  You can either use your classmates or bring actors in to read it.  I will then offer suggestions on how to strengthen your writing, and you can apply what you have learned in Part One.  And you, of course, will learn much by watching your peers’ work.

PART THREE:  Quick pitches on the project you would like to write!

DALLAS WORKSHOP #5

CAREER CONSULTATION/PRIVATE COACHING

Thursday, July 11th

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (45 minute timeslots)

Limited to 8

SOLD OUT!

"Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it made."
~ George Burns

This was one of the most requested in my survey of “What Do You Need?”.    You got it.  Very, very limited spots, so grab your timeslot.  Your private session is all about you, your career and the tools you have to take it where you want to go!  YOU GET 45 MINUTES, 1 ON 1 with me!

You can use your 45 minutes anyway you want!  Focus on auditioning by performing a scene or monologues you use regularly.   Bring in a monologue or even an acting partner (no additional charge) and have your own private scene study.  Focus on your marketing tools by showing me your reel, headshots, resume or website for evaluation and advice.  Ask me any questions you need to jump-start or advance your career.  What are your goals for your career and are you on track to meet them?

From the moment I started in this business, I created much of my own opportunity. I can brainstorm with you on how to be productive in creating, building and heightening your career, and discuss ways to create opportunity, to market, to expose yourself by thinking and creating OUTSIDE OF THE BOX!

The sky is the limit with this workshop!  I can share my knowledge on different markets.  How can you help your agent?  Do you have the right agent?  Do you need additional agents in other markets?   You can share any thoughts and aspects about your career that is or is not working, and I will brainstorm solutions with you.  This is your time and all discussions will remain confidential.

Or, you may just need that breakthrough in your acting and feel that a private session is the way to scratch deeper!

Once you sign up, you will be sent timeslots that are available.  Book earlier, more choices!  Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend a private session with your child/teen.

DALLAS WORKSHOP #6

THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF FILM ACTING

Thursday, July 11th

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Limited to 18 actors

"I have been teaching acting for film and television for over 28 years, but I do not teach the technical aspect of working on set.  Marrying acting with the technical is critical for every actor.  On set acting talent is not enough.  It is only one component of the process.  I highly recommend this very important workshop by Del Shores to everyone."

~ Michele Condrey, The Michele Condrey Studio R.E.A.C.T., Dallas

You got cast.  So, what’s next?  I've designed this workshop for actors who want to work in TV and film, and from my experience in working with actors in Dallas, this is one of the most needed. It begins with a lecture and discussion of some of the basics including hitting your mark, continuity, and playing to the camera. The benefit for actors with theatre-training is the focus on bringing the work in, not down to see how powerful and intimate working on film should be. The discussion will cover what to expect when the actor arrives on set and the basics of camera blocking, rehearsing and then shooting. This workshop is most beneficial to actors new to working on set (or rusty) and is designed to help the actor feel comfortable on set and help them take the most advantage of downtime on a set for rehearsing and preparing to stay focused with all of the activity that occurs when shooting. Each actor prepares a one-minute scene with a partner you will be sent in advance of the workshop. The actors do not work together in advance of the workshop, but they should arrive on "set" fully prepared. A camera and monitor are used during the workshop to teach the actors about master shots, close-ups, coverage and continuity. AND, each actor follows the continuity of a fellow actor, documenting each continuity error from the master to close up coverage. This exercise is an invaluable learning experience. **Footage will not be uploaded**

SCENE STUDY MASTER CLASS  DAY 1- DRAMA

Saturday, July 13th

10:00 AM - 6:00 PM (1 hour lunch TBD)

Limited to 16 actors

"Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there."

~ Meryl Streep

"
I’ve had many great acting coaches, none more insightful and inspiring than Del Shores. His writing, acting and directing experience, as well as his insider's view of "The Industry", inform his work with veteran AND beginning actors. He's a kind and generous mentor with truly helpful tips and guidance."

~ Cynthia Sanders

This time around, I am splitting up the master class scene studies after hearing from so many of you! You can choose to take the drama class, the comedy class, or both!

I love my master scene study workshops because I get to do what I love most - direct great actors!  Two days.  This time, you can sign up for both days or for just one day.  There is a big price break in registering for both days.

Drama will be emphasized on day one and comedy on day two.

The goal is to work, right?  So, I want to work with those who WANT TO WORK and who are ready to work.  You have to work hard to get work in this business.  YOU have to make it happen.  I want to work with those who are committed, who want this, who want to dig deeper and make a breakthrough to that next level that will separate you from the pack.  I want you to face your fears and choose scenes accordingly.  If you are scared of comedy, DO IT!   If intimacy scares you, choose a kissing or bedroom scene!   If drama scares you, DO IT!  In that, my workshops are ALWAYS a safe place to work and grow.

This workshop is for those who are already working or feel that they are ready to work.  If you feel that's you and you are ready to take your acting to yet another level, this is your workshop.  If you need a strong kick in the ass, this one is for you!

The first day will feature DRAMA and the second day will feature COMEDY.  I have been told that many fear comedy!  Well, I know comedy, and I can guide you as you develop your own brand of “funny”.

The moment the workshops are full – and no later than 10 days before the workshop – I will send you a list of your fellow actors.  You will then email me up to six people on that list that you would like to work with.   The goal -- get outside your comfort zone with scene partners and with material.   And if you don't have a preference or don't know the other actors, I'll choose for you.  OR, you can agree mutually on a partner and confirm together that you want to work together.

You and your partner(s) will choose your scene(s) together.  Scenes should be no longer than 7 minutes and SHOULD CHALLENGE YOU.  I will then direct you for the remainder of your time.  The goal?  To make that next break-through in your acting.   Stronger choices, no nerves, claiming your star power!   And of course, always, I offer dose of career advice and inspiration.

Although there are never rules about being in class except for your scenes, I would advise you to be there as much as possible.  You will learn as much or more by watching your fellow actors.  There is going to be some amazing work in this one.

I’m limiting this workshop to only 16 actors per day, so I’ll have more time to work with you. Ready, get set, go.  First come, first serve!

ADVANCED YOUTH WELCOME
Advanced youth are very welcome.  Parents, just know language and scene content will NOT be censored, so mature teens only please.
